Pastor Jim Workman is the Rector of St. Michael's Episcopal Church and his leadership and enthusiasm have stimulated our growth, both physically and spiritually.
Getting to Know Jim The call to become a minister happened to Jim Workman, our new rector, at age 16. He was reading Acts 5:20 when the words "tell them the message about this life" struck him and he wanted to find out what God was trying to tell him. He attended college and seminary to become a Presbyterian minister. Later, while flying to Cambridge, England in 1988 on a sabbatical, he decided he would attend the Church of England while living there. He was "unexpectedly captivated" by the Book of Common Prayer and decided to become an Episcopalian. After attending Virginia Episcopal Seminary, Jim was ordained in 1994 as a priest in the Episcopal Church. Jim loves the Episcopal faith and he especially loves the worship service and preaching. The worship service taps into the ancient worship of the third century and the continuity is comforting to him. He enjoys the challenge of creating a fresh sermon each week that relates the Scriptures to the situation of the people. The sermon also provides an opportunity for Jim to "tell them the message about this life", his original calling. Jim has three grown children--two sons and one daughter (all married)--and five grandchildren. Fortunately, all live in the NC/SC area. When not involved in church activities, Jim likes spending time with his family, photography, hiking, group sports, reading Civil War history, and yard work. If you have ideas for new programs or improvements at St. Michael's, bring them to Jim. He wants to hear them--but be prepared to do something about them. | |||||
